Worship in Lockdown
On Monday the Prime Minister declared that England would go into lockdown that will probably last until the last week of February if not longer. Public worship with a congregation present is permitted to continue under the government rules but many feel that the church, despite its best efforts, cannot adequately protect people from this virus, especially with the new and even more contagious strain. It’s very difficult to understand what is going on, so many factors have changed, but the more brutal statistics of hospitalisations and deaths indicate that things are as bad as they were last March and April, if not worse. However important we know worship and prayer to be, we can’t continue to have worship with a congregation present and guarantee their safety.
As of this Sunday open worship throughout the benefice is suspended. This decision has been initially taken by the Rector in consultation and collaboration with the churchwardens and deputy church wardens of all the parishes as well as the other licensed clergy in the benefice. We are asking all three PCC’s to approve a special resolution to suspend worship in church with a congregation present from now until February 28th. If we are in a position to return to public worship before then, then we will. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and review it as often as necessary. And we sincerely pray that we won’t need a further resolution to extend the suspension of worship.
In the meantime, we will return to livestreaming our services on Facebook at Worship in Warminster at 10 am. But you can view it any time after that and if you don’t have access to Facebook, we will also be putting it on YouTube.
We will also increase daily morning prayer to six days a week (presently 4), Monday to Saturday, as of Monday January 11th until the lockdown ends. The time of the service remains at 9 am. We continue with a Wednesday evening compline at 9 pm. All these services can be found on Worship in Warminster.
The Minster church has also taken the decision to close the church for private prayer until such time as we judge it safe to re-open it.
